With the walls, the inhabitants of that time protected themselves from attacks and looting by other peoples. Go along the wall. Inside the watchtowers you will find illustrated weapons used by the soldiers who guarded the settlement.
At the time when people surrounded the settlement with stone walls, crossbows were extremely rare and expensive, most likely bows and arrows were used here. For some time, this settlement was guarded by the Lombards (known also as Longobards), who were known as good soldiers.
Before the invention of the stove or cooktop, people cooked on an open hearth in front of or inside the house. They did not light the fire with matches or a lighter, but used natural materials that were within reach.
On the wall in one of the houses is shown one of the ways they used to start a fire.
At that time they didn’t know matches or lighters. But they knew how to start a fire with flint stones, which created bundles of sparks, or by rubbing wooden sticks together, creating heat that ignited dry grass or dry leaves. When the fire was lit, they quickly added smaller twigs, and then gradually larger and larger pieces of wood. They also knew how to store fire. They carried embers in a pot, on which dry grass or dry leaves were placed.
When archaeologists discovered this house you are in now, they were amazed. They found out that the inhabitants of this house warmed up in the winter in a very special way, which 1600 years ago was a privilege of the rich, but today more and more people can afford it.
The people who built this house used underfloor heating to warm themselves in the winter. Underfloor heating was common and popular with wealthy people during the Roman Empire, as it heated the entire room evenly. Usually the floor was raised, and hot air from a special furnace circulated underneath.
People have been living on Rifnik for 6000 years.
The first inhabitants built a small settlement on Rifnik. They lived in houses. At the very beginning, houses were built from easily available materials, as durable tools made of bronze, iron or even steel were not yet known.
A prehistoric house reveals the answer! This is the one covered with a thatched roof!
In prehistoric times, people mostly used tools made from wood, stone or animal bones. Since they didn’t yet know how to make a metal saw, they couldn’t saw trunks into planks. That’s why they made the walls of their houses from fallen tree trunks or stones, and on Rifnik they wove thinner branches into a net. This net was plastered from both sides with soil mixed with water and chopped grass or straw. The roofs of the houses were covered with straw or grass. Openings such as doors were most likely covered with animal skins. They retreated to such houses from the wind, rain, snow… At the same time, they were also warm, as they could heat the interior of the houses.
During late antiquity, around 1500 years ago, two early Christian churches were built on top of Rifnik – one large and one smaller. There are several rooms in the large church. In one of the rooms, traces of a structure can be seen on the floor, which had an important role for Christianity.
The first letter of the answer you find in the church will help you.
Two early Christian churches were built on Rifnik. This tells us that the settlement on Rifnik played an important role in the area. The bigger church building is still a large building even for today’s standards, so archaeologists and historians assume that Rifnik may have been the seat of some important church dignitary.
Archaeologists discovered something very unusual in this church. To the right of the stone steps was once a grave. Two people, a man and a woman, were buried in this grave. They were the only people who were buried inside the walls of the settlement, all the others were buried in the cemetery on the southern slope of the hill.
The grave was made of stone blocks. This stone sarcophagus is the first ever discovered example of a person buried inside a church in the area of today’s Slovenia. Archaeologists discovered that the sarcophagus was intended for the woman. Later, they buried a man next to her in the same sarcophagus.
Archaeologists photographed the excavated sarcophagus with the skeletons of the deceased.

During the Roman Empire, people did not live on top of Rifnik hill. This was the period of peace. They moved to the valley, and on the top of Rifnik hill, most likely near the rainwater cistern, they built a special building of which almost nothing remains, only the corner wall.
During the Roman Empire, the inhabitants built a larger building on the top of Rifnik, in the area near the rainwater collector and under the early Christian church. Archaeologists speculate that a temple dedicated to a local deity may have stood here.
“We cannot live without water.”
In this temple, a special god of water was worshipped.
You can find the answer in the well!
The god Aqvon was the god of water. He was worshiped at the time when Rifnik was under the Roman Empire and only in the area of Rifnik and its surroundings. The god Aqvon is said to live in the river Voglajna, which flows through the valley east and north of Rifnik towards Celje.
To the left of the monuments to the water god Aqvon stands a monument with two people shaking hands.
It is part of a tombstone from the time of the Roman Empire, which depicts two people shaking hands. The gesture with two outstretched fingers indicates that these two people are good friends. A similar gesture occurs even today, when people take a photo of themselves and point their finger at the person with whom they are taking a photo.
You are doing great. You just have one more task to solve! Rifnik is known for its star. It is not a star that shines in the sky, but an object that was found here.
The answer is hiding behind you – under the 2nd step!
Rifnik is known for its star. It is not a star that shines in the sky, but an object that was found here.
The stars of Rifnik are golden earrings. It is a wonderful work of precise masters who knew how to create real masterpieces. Wealthier people could afford such gold earrings. Some were found in graves, as gifts to deceased women.
